Bedford Bicycle Advisory Committee
(approved 2008 Feb 13)
Jan. 9, 2008, 7:30pm, Town Hall, Bedford, MA
Present: Terry Gleason, Joel Parks, Ralph Hammond, Bob Sawyer, Brian O'Donnell and Holly Webster
December meeting was cancelled. The minutes from Nov. were accepted. Joel will correct typos if necessary and post them on our website.
Continuing:
-
Police Accident report -
Bob reported that there were no accidents in either November or December.
-
CPC Letter -
There has been no request for Bike path funding at the annual town meeting, because we do not yet have a report from VBH.
-
MMB Extension -
DPW is planning some improvements soon. There are a total of 21 trees that need to be removed, three of which will need a public hearing first but as it is a safety issue it will probably be done, although no date for the hearing has been set. Rich Warrington has documentation that there are 24 miles of hiking trails in Bedford. Terry reported that there has been no misuse of conservation land by bicycles. He will write a letter to the conservation Committee asking for an acknowledgement that we have answered all their concerns as mentioned in the letter of 2005.
-
Mile Post Signs -
Ralph and Joel of the subcommittee will meet the last week of January to work this out. They are considering, not mile posts per se, but rather signs indicating where they are in relation to Depot Park, Lexington, etc.
-
Safe Routes to School -
Bob spoke to Amy Hamilton who said the person in charge of the after school program said she cannot handle it at this time. Such a program has to come from parents or the school administration. All our committee can do is be supportive. Bob is working with Boy Scout Troop 194 as the Bicycle Merit Badge counselor.
-
Rec. Dept Fall Bike Training Program -
Susan Grieb has another project that seems to have priority.
-
Blue Ribbon Mall Bike Racks -
We need a person to be a liaison to the Planning Board. Brian O'Donnell said that he would do it. He knows Sandra Hackman and Bob Fagan already. What is important is that he will get the agenda and either be there or get another person from our committee to be there for any items that involve bicycles. Terry suggests that we all think about what we would like to see in Bedford for bicycles. Joel suggests that we devote a good amount of time to this at our Annual Meeting of the Friends.
New Business:
-
MAPC Bike Rack Program -
the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission will give bike racks to the town. Securing them requires some leg work deciding where we would like to have them. We should all come to the next meeting with ideas of public property where they should be. Holly suggested Memorial Park.
-
West Lexington Greenway -
The Lexington Trials Committee is hosting two meetings about the West Lexington Greenway project. The first will be Tues. Jan. 15, DPW building second floor, 7:30pm and on Wed. Jan. 16 there will be a public meeting in Lexington. Basically, the greenway will follow the power lines both north and south.
Next meeting - February 13, 7:30pm, Town Hall
Meeting adjourned 8:45pm.
Bedford Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway
