Bedford Bicycle Advisory Committee
(approved 2007 Sept 12)
Aug. 8, 2007, 7:40pm, Town Hall, Bedford, MA
Present: Terry Gleason, Bob Sawyer, Joel Parks, Ralph Hammond, Charlie Webster, and Holly Webster
Minutes of the last four months (April minutes, May minutes, June minutes, July minutes) were approved. Joel will try to get the website up to date.
Continuing:
-
Lexington resurfacing -
We have seen no signs of any work being started. On a more positive note, however, we have heard that Hartwell Avenue will be remarked for three lanes, the center one being for turning only and a bicycle path alongside. It just awaits selectmen's approval.
-
Police Accident report -
Bob reported that there were two: one at the intersection of Hillside and Great Road and did involve an injury, the second on Great Road at the shopping center.
-
Mile Post signs -
Joel suggests we at least paint a line at the Lexington/Bedford border and label each side and also a label at each intersection. Ralph is making 4x4 wooden posts for the Trails Committee. We would like this to be a Trails Committee project. Joel will ask Rich Warrington to paint the line at the border and to obtain more posts for Ralph.
-
MMB Extension -
Joel did not yet but will talk to Rich Warrington about VHB and what is next. Rich had been on vacation, but should have a status report ready. Ralph reports that trees are no longer a problem. He reports that there are four trees that need to be removed if the width is 12 feet and nineteen trees if the path is 14 feet wide. He considered all trees as 1 ½ inches at Breast Height Diameter (BHD). Warrington must contact the weed wacker to clear beside the trail. Ralph said that Rotary could do this. If the trees have been designated "hazardous", the tree warden (Rich Warrington) can remove the trees. Then the bush wacker could get through. Joel will write a letter to the conservation Committee saying that we have addressed all the issues of their communication of Nov. 22, 2005. Terry will contact Lexington to see if conservation lands abutting the MM are more bothered. Also he believes that kids are no longer throwing rocks off the bridge over Mill Street onto traffic. Terry will help Joel with the letter and bring their draft to our next meeting. He thinks we should use the incident of stolen van in the woods to illustrate what would not have happened if the path had been paved.
-
Safe Routes to School -
Terry volunteered to teach safe bicycling in our schools. He will look at the website of "Safe Routes to Schools", put out by Mass/Highway, to see if an authority could come in and say we need to develop safe routes to school. It has to be parents, perhaps through BEST. Bob will help Terry and maybe do it on Bedford Day.
-
Elmbrook path -
Bob has everything done and will give his work to Nat Brown tomorrow. He showed us a map that the town had prepared. Permission to build the bridge has been given.
-
Rec. Dept Fall Bike Training Program -
Not right now.
-
NGRT washouts -
Joel will follow up with Rich Warrington. We need stewards for the NGRT. The Bridge Street Path stewardship can be given to the Trails Com.
New:
-
Sunday Sept. 23 there will be a cyclo-cross bike race at Middlesex Community College. Joel will find out more about it and see if there could be an amateur class that could include Bedford kids, and if it could be announced in the Bedford Minuteman, and report back to us at our next meeting.
-
Saturday Sept 29 is the day of the Three Apples Storytelling event at the Unitarian Church. We will again have the bike corral but expect to have it in the area across from the Old Town Hall.
Next meeting - September 12, 7:30pm, Town Hall
Meeting adjourned 9:05pm.
Bedford Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway

Plans for Bedford Day -
The booth will be manned by Joel, Terry, and Ray with Charlie and Holly coming after the parade. Holly will call Ray to remind him to reserve the spot for our tent and our corral. Terry will make flyers with the map of how to shop with flyer info on the back, get a hundred copies made (sending the bill to Don Blake). He will also price out balloons and if not too expensive he will get those as well, again charging Don Blake. These would be for Bedford Day distribution.
New:
-
Arthur Ellis has HO Module of the Depot in 1850. He also has a more up-to-date module for 1993. Terry will try to build one for the projected greenway. It may be ready for the November display at the library.
-
Terry will find out about the meeting of the Save the Earth Group and will email all of us when they are meeting and see if we can attend and share.
-
The bike rack at the Blue Ribbon strip mall is insufficient. Holly will email Richard Joly that he should speak to the code enforcement officer to take care of this. It is important to let developers know of the specifications that are in the project, so that the proper type is put in at the beginning instead of having to replace them.
Meeting adjourned 9:40pm.
